Guitar Player Magazine Interview 2005 a] What YOU consider as your stylistic genre
My style is a little hard to define because it doesn’t fit into any particular existing genre. As I’m originally from Medellin, Colombia (South America), I use Latin rhythms such as salsa, cumbia, and vallenato, mainly for the percussion and bass tracks. However, since I’m a rock musician and I play and arrange all the instruments in my recordings, these traditional Latin sounds come out with a rock vibe, complete with my solos.
[b] Your age -- or whatever age you wish to publish.
[c] Your guitar influences.
There are many different guitarists that have influenced me at some point in my life. I admire great guitarists such as Nuno Bettencourt, Carlos Santana, Frank Gambale, Tom Morello, John Frusciante, Dimebag Darrell, Steve Lukather, and Ace Frehley and athough they differ from my sound and music, I’d like to think that I have learned something from each of them. There are three guitarists that I always listen to - Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen, each with a unique style, which keeps me hypnotized. They are the reason I have always wanted to make instrumental rock guitar music.
[d] Your main gear list (guitar, amp, FX goodies, strings and gauges.)
My Paul Reed Smith Custom 24 is the guitar I use most of the time but when I need 7 strings I play my Ibanez Universe UV777P. I also have a Gibson Flying V and two guitars I built from scratch. I play all the instruments in my recordings. My bass guitar is an Ibanez BTB406QM, my drum kit is a Pintech with an Alesis module, my keyboard is a Yamaha CS2X, and my acoustic guitar is an Epiphone EJ-200 CE. As for strings, I keep trying different ones all the time, but so far I've been happy using D'Addario XL .10 - .46 because they’re sealed, so they never rust. My main AMP is a Fender Cybertwin combo and I'm so happy with it that I want to try the new model. I also use a Digitech Whammy, a Morley Bad Horsey Two wah, and a Shure wireless system. Sometimes I also use a Johnson J-Station, which is the unit I used during the Guitar Hero Show to be able to switch between distortion and the acoustic guitar simulation.
[e] What was your best moment at GH?
Where do I start? The whole experience was amazing right from the first night when I finally got to meet the other finalists, the GP staff, Joe Satriani, and Steve and Trevor Lukather. Another favorite moment of mine was playing on a live television broadcast to promote the Guitar Hero event with Rob Burton and Michael Molenda. This was exciting and nerve wracking at the same time because we had to represent the talent of the contest and improvise live in front of those cameras without a band, at 8 AM (not easy after a very late night). Definitely the actual concert at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was something that I will never forget. Sharing a stage with all those talented guitarists from different parts of the world in front of such an incredible panel of judges while enjoying my favorite kind of music was certainly the highlight of the whole event. Also, hearing everyone’s comments and getting feedback on my music was very special.
[f] What did you feel that GH represented for you?
It represents a new chapter in my career. I hope that being selected as one of the top ten from thousands of guitarists worldwide by the Guitar Player staff will bring recognition and open new doors for me. To be honest, before this event, I never really thought that there was much hope in getting known as an instrumental artist, but now I'm really excited about the prospects my music reaching a larger audience – beyond my family, friends and students! I’m planning a Colombian tour with other guitarists around the end of the year.
[g] Anything else you wish to add.
The show in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was so incredible and unforgettable that it’d be really great if all the finalists could get together again and play some shows in different places, so that people could see this new generation of guitarists. A big thank you to Michael Molenda and his team at Guitar Player for organizing and running this much needed event to promote new talent. I invite everyone to check out my web site at www.juancoronado.com where you can watch some videos, listen to some songs, and of course -- buy my new album!
